Seal the building envelope
- Close gaps around pipes, vents, cables and utility lines with rodent-resistant materials such as steel wool and sealant or metal flashing.
- Fit door sweeps and repair damaged screens and weatherstripping.
- Cover attic and soffit vents with hardware cloth.
- Inspect the roofline, especially where palm fronds or branches touch it.
Our guide to finding pest entry points explains how to inspect each area.
Remove food and water
- Store pet food, birdseed and pantry items in sealed containers.
- Use lidded trash cans and keep them away from walls.
- Pick up fallen fruit from yard trees.
- Fix leaks and standing water.
Reduce shelter
Trim branches at least a few feet from the roof, store firewood and lumber off the ground and away from the house and remove clutter from garages and sheds. Roof rats in South Florida often travel along tree limbs and wires, so cutting those routes helps.
Check regularly
Look for droppings, gnaw marks and rub marks every few months. If you find signs, see signs you may have a rodent problem and consider professional rodent control. Our Fort Lauderdale pest control team can inspect the attic and exterior.
