Step 1: Identify the roach
Large reddish-brown roaches that fly or wander in are usually American cockroaches (often called palmetto bugs). Small tan roaches with two dark stripes behind the head are German cockroaches and signal an indoor infestation. Treatment differs, as explained on our cockroach control page.
Step 2: Remove what they need
- Wash dishes nightly and wipe grease and crumbs.
- Store food, pet food and trash in sealed containers.
- Fix dripping faucets and pipes, and dry sinks overnight.
- Remove stacks of cardboard and paper.
Step 3: Treat the right way
Gel baits placed in cracks and along roach runways work better than sprays for many indoor infestations. Avoid foggers and bug bombs; they can scatter roaches deeper into walls and spread them to other rooms. Read all product labels and keep products away from children and pets.
Step 4: Seal and block
Caulk gaps around pipes and baseboards, install door sweeps and screen vents and drains. Roaches enter through plumbing gaps, so check under sinks and around appliances. Our guide to finding pest entry points shows where to look.
When to call a professional
Call if you see roaches during the day, find droppings or egg cases, or the problem returns after DIY treatment. Our Fort Lauderdale pest control service team can inspect, confirm the species and plan follow-up visits.
