What to look for
- Reddish-brown flat insects about the size of an apple seed.
- Small rust-colored or black spots on sheets and mattress seams.
- Pale shed skins and tiny whitish eggs near seams and crevices.
- A sweet, musty odor in heavy infestations.
How to inspect step by step
- Remove bedding and check the folds and corners.
- Use a flashlight along mattress piping, tags and seams.
- Check the box spring underside, bed frame joints and headboard.
- Inspect nightstands, baseboards, outlet covers and curtains.
- Check luggage and upholstered chairs.
What not to do
Do not use foggers, throw out your mattress in a hurry or move bedding to other rooms. These can spread bed bugs. The EPA has guidance on bed bugs listed below.
