The colony is bigger than the trail
The ants on your counter are workers. The nest may be inside a wall void, under a planter or in the mulch, and it can contain thousands of ants. Unless treatment reaches the colony, the trail returns. Our page on ant control in Fort Lauderdale covers the species you are most likely to see.
Why spraying can backfire
Contact sprays kill visible ants and leave a repellent residue. For some species, such as ghost ants, this can cause colonies to split into several smaller ones, which is why trails sometimes appear in new places after spraying. Slow-acting baits that workers carry back to the nest are usually more effective.
Five reasons ants return
- Crumbs, grease, pet food or sweet residue remain.
- A moisture source such as a leaking pipe or drip irrigation is nearby.
- Branches or shrubs touch the house and act as bridges.
- Cracks around windows, doors and pipes stay open.
- Rain floods outdoor nests and pushes ants indoors.
What actually stops them
- Identify the species before choosing a method.
- Use baits along trails and avoid spraying them.
- Fix leaks and keep mulch a few inches from the foundation.
- Seal entry points and trim vegetation.
- Add exterior treatment through a recurring plan. A local exterminator in Fort Lauderdale can recommend one after an inspection.
