Signs of subterranean and Formosan termites
- Pencil-width mud tubes on foundations, walls or piers.
- Swarms of winged termites, often at dusk or near lights.
- Wood that sounds hollow or breaks easily.
- Sagging floors or bulging walls in severe cases.
Signs of drywood termites
- Tiny six-sided droppings (frass) collecting below wood, window sills or furniture.
- Small kick-out holes in wood.
- Discarded wings on window sills.
Drywood termites live inside dry wood without soil contact, so they can occur in attics and furniture.
What can be mistaken for termites
Flying ants are often confused with termite swarmers, and water damage can mimic termite damage. Termite swarmers have straight antennae, a thick waist and equal-length wings. When in doubt, take a photo and call; see our termite inspection and control page for details.
What to do if you find signs
- Do not disturb the area; it can scatter termites.
- Photograph what you see and collect a few insects or frass in a sealed container.
- Call for an inspection. Our pest control company in Fort Lauderdale team can identify the species.
- Ask about treatment options and what any warranty covers.
Swarms often have a seasonal pattern; read about termite swarm season in South Florida.
