Tip and toss every week
- Empty plant saucers, buckets, toys, tarps and birdbaths.
- Clean gutters and drains.
- Flip or cover boats, wheelbarrows and containers.
- Check bromeliads and other plants that hold water.
Some mosquitoes can breed in a bottle cap of water, so small containers matter.
Protect the living space
- Repair holes in screens and lanai enclosures.
- Use fans on patios; mosquitoes are weak fliers.
- Trim dense shrubs and tall grass where mosquitoes rest.
Treat what you cannot drain
Larvicides can be used in ponds, fountains and ditches that cannot be emptied; follow labels and check rules about fish and wildlife. The EPA and CDC pages below explain safe options.
